For years, sleep experts have been touting latex mattress benefits, but do they really help promote a better night’s rest? Whether man-made or derived from a rubber tree, latex beds have consistently garnered high marks for their pressure-relieving properties and buoyant feel.
When customers ask about the best latex mattress, we always give the same answer: there isn’t one single best! Completely different than memory foam in terms of composition and function, latex has just the right amount of “springiness,” and is naturally self-ventilating for cooler sleep.
Given our many years of experience, we know that the perfect mattress for one shopper may be the last choice for another. Personal comfort preference, sleep styles and health concerns all come into play when you’re buying a new bed. When you visit Wildcat Mattress, our friendly and knowledgeable Sleep Specialists can explain the ins and outs of latex sleep surfaces, and give you plenty of models to try for yourself.
In today’s market, not all latex mattresses are created equally. Pure, natural latex made from a rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) affords many health benefits. For one, an organic latex mattress is naturally hypoallergenic and won’t cause congestion or break outs. People with sensitive skin or who are allergic to dust mites will also fare better on a natural latex bed. Latex mattresses made from 100 percent rubber sap are also free of harmful chemicals, making them a healthier choice. On top of that, natural latex is mold and mildew resistant, which is ideal in humid environments.
Latex mattresses are praised for their ability to stop allergy attacks, eliminate back pain, reduce pressure points and keep partner rollover disturbance to a minimum. There are two kinds of latex, both named after the processes used in manufacturing. The Dunlop method, in use for nearly a century, yields a denser and less buoyant feel. Some argue that it’s not as pliable or breathable when compared to the more laborious Talalay method. The Talalay process uses flash freezing that promotes a more uniform texture and cloud-like springiness that goes through the entire mattress. Because of its consistent large cell structure, Talalay latex has better aeration than Dunlop, which is a bit heavier and firmer.
Some customers who are looking for a pure latex mattress can get a little confused by the terminology. Dunlop and Talalay methods can be used in the vulcanizing process for both rubber and synthetic latex. Beds that are made with natural Talalay latex have been manufactured with no petrochemical additives and derived from 100 percent botanical material. If you’re looking for material purity and a mattress made using eco-friendly production methods, natural Talalay latex may be right for you.
Synthetic latex is made of petroleum byproducts that are often blended with natural rubber latex. Just like its organic counterpart, synthetic latex holds its shape over time, is incredibly durable and can be customized to various firmness levels.
Yielding beneath the body, but never too bouncy, latex is frequently used in premium mattress toppers. Latex mattress toppers offer amazing pressure relief and are sold in a variety of thicknesses (1-3 inches). Besides being naturally anti-fungal and antimicrobial, latex mattress toppers offer superior orthopedic support and can transform and ordinary mattress into an oasis of comfort.
